With technology becoming more a part of our lives than ever, it can leave many parents asking the same question: how much screen time is too much for your child?
What Is Screen Time?
Simply put, screen time is any time in front of a screen. It’s that simple! It could be anything from playing video games or watching TV to doing homework or watching online videos. That’s right; screen time can be on the TV, computer, tablet, or phone.
Believe it or not, but it’s thought children aged 2 to 5 years old are spending 32 hours a week in front of a screen. As if that wasn’t enough, teens average spend 9 hours a day interacting with forms of media while adults take the prize with 11 hours a day.
Many believe that children aged 18 months and older should avoid screen altogether unless they are video chatting with friends and family. Thankfully, there are many ways to keep youngsters entertained without relying on the screens.
18 Months To 2 Years
This can be the time to start introducing screens at these ages – as long as children are supervised by their parents. Not only do high-quality videos or apps give children a chance to experience a whole new world, but parents can also explain what they are watching to help young ones understand.
2 To 5 Years
These ages can be another perfect time for parents to spend time with their young ones as people believe that an hour a day of watching videos together or playing games on the screen could be enough to help families bond without children having too much screen time.
6 Years Plus
This can be an age where children are allowed to start using more media, but experts state that keeping constant restrictions is key to make sure there’s never too much screen time. Setting boundaries, such as increasing by a few minutes every month, could help to make sure those rules stay in place.
Screen Time Benefits
Thankfully, there are benefits to letting our little ones spend time with screens. As well as learning new skills, children can also learn how to make decisions and can be introduced to a whole new play style thanks to their extra level of fun.
Screen Time Cons
Sadly, there are also some downsides that come with too much screen time. Headaches, a sedentary lifestyle, and backache can be some signs of too much media. Taking breaks, looking away from the screen, and keeping the tablet at the correct height can help to combat any of these issues.
Screen time can be a subject that many parents worry about, especially as tech appears to be taking over the world. Thankfully, a few alterations and restrictions could soon see your child getting the most out of their time interacting with media.
